Qigong

Qigong (Chi Kung) and a similar form known as Nei Gong have been used in the Chinese healing arts for several thousands of years, primarily for maintaining health and increasing life span and have been used for developing internal and external power in Chinese martial arts such as Tai Chi for the last 1500 years. Qi means energy which circulates in the body and Gong means work (energy work), Qigong practice primary is to promote and improve the energy flow in the body and for control and cultivation of that internal energy.

Since the 1950’s  Qigong has been more open to the public, though originally it was kept within a family or to select students, even Taoist and Buddhist had forms of Qigong for health and spiritual enlightenment, which were only available to those who resided in temples. As Qigong became public knowledge there was some skepticism if Qigong really worked as some did not understand internal energy cultivation or some doubted the existence of Qi, also some Qigong students were taught incorrectly and there was even some superstitions by some Chinese that it was some form of magic.
Qigong is scientific and is based on Chinese medical knowledge and theory, relating Qi with Nature and teaches us how we can harmonize our energy with our environment for a healthy and peaceful life.

Originally most important books on Qi would explain the concept regarding Qi and Nature and also there were books regarding the Meridians which are major channels that connect the vital organs with the rest of the body; the smaller channels known as Luo extend and branch out from the Meridians themselves and are connecting channels. There are 12 physical meridians connecting to the vital organs which we work on in our Chi Kung Healing course and 2 major vessels (psychic meridians) known as Mai which are part of our inner alchemy training. In acupuncture we find cavities known as Xue along the meridians and these points or cavities are what an acupuncturist would stimulate to bring energetic balance back into the body. Qigong acts in the same way as acupuncture and helps to stimulate the flow of blood and increase Qi (energy) through a sequence of exercises, meditations and massage.

In Qigong we have the elements of Ying & Yang, which represents duality, female and male, night and day, hot and cold, soft and hard for example and the Ying and Yang foundation and theory is about the harmonization and balance of these two polarities of duality as a human being. In Ying and Yang theory we also have the 5 element concept, metal wood, air, fire and earth and how they interact with each other and nature, also on how their interaction may affect us.

Most Qigong theory and practice was developed via introspection of nature and the inter changes that happened known as Nei Shi Gong Fu, also we have Wai Shiang which is the actual physical examination of the human body which mainly predominates in western medical science and which discredits the internal understanding of Chinese medical theory Nei Shi Gong Fu. In Nei Shi Gong we also have the observation and relationship of Qi to food, emotions and sounds and how they affect our way of living and our health. These observations were discovered and understood over a long period of time and once understood how Qi related to their lives and health they created methods to improve and increase the Qi flow in their body, Nei Shi Gong Fu was the origins of how Qigong was developed.

Tai Chi Chiang Mai Thailand

Tai Chi Chiang Mai

Tai Chi, otherwise know as Tai Chi Ch'uan or Tai Ji Quan, (supreme ultimate fist) is an internal martial art discipline, dating back over 500 years. Many who are curious about Tai Chi Chuan are not aware that Tai Chi is a martial art and only know Tai Chi for it smooth, soft and harmonious body movements. When a curious student embarks on learning Tai Chi Chuan, they must be able to integrate the soft and hard aspects of the art, it is not necessary for the student to become too rigid and learn only one aspect and forfeit the other, we must learn to embrace the whole art for what it is. Tai Chi requires a good strong foundation and root, good body dynamics, good core strength, solid awareness, structural relaxation, peaceful mind, relax breathing and solid commitment in learning Tai Chi Ch'uan. A good Tai Chi teacher will be aware of these elements and would be able to lead a student in the right direction, the student would need to develop patience in learning as the Teacher would have already mastered this aspect in their practice and teaching. It is very important that we try and master each step before moving to the next, this helps to develop a strong foundation, we have to remember any imbalance in our practice would have the potential to create imbalance in our lives also.. Those that have the commitment in Tai Chi can improve and deepen their awareness and practice and learn to harmonize themselves with the natural elements of their surroundings, so a natural environment is very conductive in learning Tai Chi as it helps us to embrace our own internal energy with the energy of our surroundings, eventually leading the student to the higher levels of Tai Chi practice which is to master not the external warrior like in many of the hard style martial
arts but to establish our connection to the internal warrior deep within ourselves.

Tai Chi with Chi Kung practice

Chi Kung or otherwise know as Qigong is use for internal energy work and is a great healing, strengthening, energizing, focusing, cleansing and opening body method. Tai Chi in combination with Chi Kung leads to a more effective Tai Chi practice.

Practicing Tai Chi without Chi Kung / Qigong is like a ship without water. Chi Kung / Qigong helps to enhance ones Tai Chi, it gives that inner connection which helps the Tai Chi forms look and feel more graceful. Chi Kung helps to soften ones hardness, allowing for a more relaxed body and mind. When we are in this position we can connect more with our own personal energies and those around us. With Chi Kung we learn to harness our internal power and learn to conserve that power for appropriate action.

It is of up most importance to include Chi Kung as part of your Tai Chi, this is a very important factor in your practice.

We hold Chi Kung classes in Chiang Mai at Body & Mind Healing School, 5 Days a week and offer a Chi Kung / Qigong 7 week training program.

Tai Chi For Beginners; Part Two:

Chen San Feng Tai Chi founder

In our first part of our Tai Chi for beginners we look at some essential elements in learning this fine art, though there is one major consideration that needs to be look at and we will discuss that here. As some of you are aware Tai Chi Chuan has profound healing elements and can also be use in self defense. I believe that practicing Tai Chi will help balance our internal energies and help us in understanding or embracing those energies better, helping us interact in a more balanced way. In this world there is no Yin without Yang and Yang without Yin. When deciding to study Tai Chi you would have a very important consideration to make, this is whether you wish to embrace your Yang energies as well as your Yin energies as both are within you and around you regardless if you are male or female and both these energies are an important part of understanding Tai Chi Chuan. Tai Chi Chuan was reformed in China around the early part of the 20th century and has taken a softer approach in some schools, this led many people to believe that Tai Chi was only for older folk or for health only. Tai Chi is for all ages, though if one is not practicing the self defense strategies, then one is not really practicing Tai Chi Chuan as it was originally formed and taught. Please be aware it is not necessary to beat on your fellow practitioners, but to inter exchange your energies with others who are practicing these strategies will help teach you, what Tai Chi Chuan is about.

We offer classes of Tai Chi in Chaing Mai Thailand. Our courses start for 5 days and can be extended for many months depending how deep you wish to study

Tai Chi For Beginners; Part One:

When first starting out to learn Tai Chi Chuan it is important to know which style of Tai Chi you wish to learn. There are many styles of Tai Chi to choose from and they will be discussed in future blogs, you would also have to consider the time you have available to learn, as Tai Chi Chuan can takes years of continued practice to really learn the art fully. Over the years Tai Chi Chuan has evolved into a more commercial system, which has had a big impact on how people view Tai Chi Chuan. Now in today's western ways there is a need for instant gratification, hence it also has had a big impact on how Tai Chi Chuan is taught. Therefore when starting out, it is very  important to find a good teacher who is able to guide you with patience, understanding, focus, respect and good teaching methods. With Wudang Tai Chi Chuan the forms are broken down into a series of stages, helping the teacher to teach a correct method and student to learn correctly and to remember what they have been taught. In future blogs, we will look at more considerations, for those interested to learn this wonderful Chinese art.
